Multidisciplinary artist

Lena Leiko is a self-taught artist from a dynasty of artists. For the past eight years, she has lived and worked in Amsterdam.

Born with a pencil in her hands and constantly drawing, at the age of 16, Lena started getting interested in portrait photography. Ever since, she swapped her pencil for the camera and began exploring a new field by reading books about photography and practicing everywhere. Gaining experience in various fields, after years Lena decided to employ her skills in the independent path of fine art macro photography and mixed media.

Lena’s artistic research is driven by the idea of ​​the interconnection of micro particles and cells of life on Earth on the scale of the universe, as well as the life of galaxies and black holes on a micro scale. She reflects on the nature and causes of the Big Bang, where it is all heading, and wonders how every particle of a human and everything on Earth is part of the boundless Cosmos. In the process of creating her photographs, she strives to repeat the logic of micro and macro—scaling the smallest particles into transcendental, unimaginable images.

 

Initially, Lena creates objects to photograph and then enhances them with light sources and camera settings. Complementing her photographs with mixed media objects, this complex approach helps her achieve a depth of image that immerses the viewer in the macro and micro world.

 

Lena’s message is to look deep into organisms on our planet and far within the Cosmos, to awaken the thought of the uniqueness of life on Earth. She emphasises how humanity should protect what is given to us by the mysteries of the Universe and try not to destroy it.
